Minehead is a town rich in history dating back at least seven centuries. In the early 14th Century it was a port – originally named Mynedd, meaning ‘hill’ in Welsh – but it wasn’t until 1480 that a jetty was built, enabling the docking of trading vessels carrying livestock, salt, butter, coal, cloth and other cargo. In the late 19th Century Minehead started to become the popular seaside resort that we know today. Now home to a population of more than 10,000, the town has developed a certain tourist charm while still retaining its heritage. Minehead’s main pull in terms of touristm is its Butlins holiday centre, though it offers much for its visitors to do and see when they arrive. The West Somerset Railway will take you on a 23-mile journey behind a heritage steam or diesel engine, linking nine stations along its path. Walkers can enjoy the South West Coast Path, a national trail which starts its epic 630-mile route in Minehead, or enjoy one of the guided paths which explore the town and its historic depths, while those who prefer the water can take advantage of the town’s surfing and sailing opportunities. Two cinemas, numerous amusement arcades and shops, a golf club and a community leisure centre are among the facilities that make it a perfect destination for families. And there is much to explore on a historical note, including the 14th Century Parish Church of St Michael. Nearby sits Exmoor National Park, much of which has been classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and an Environmentally Sensitive Area, which provides an ideal retreat for ramblers, nature lovers, horseriders, cyclists and anyone who enjoys the great outdoors.
